I sat in a briefing by a government contractor on the Cell Broadband Engine, which is going to power the Playstation 3, and I was absolutely blown away by the details. I'm going to look for some stuff online, but the bottomline was somewhere between 26-50 times faster than a P4 at 3.4GHz (pretty sure that was it) in specific situations. No comparison to dual core, which was disappointing, but it was an amazing briefing though somewhat scary with the implications in certain ways.

The estimate was 1 teraflop from a single chip by 2010. :Q

Technology is crazy these days!

Cell BroadBand Engine--is that what they're calling it these days? Does it make the Internet go faster, or does it have I/O comparable to HyperTransport and Infiniband? Sony should learn from the failure that was "NetBurst".

It's actually an IBM chip, though I think Sony partnered in the development along with Toshiba. It's hardly hype though -- check out the specs.
