celery system w/ voodoo2 sli

if you use a non-SMP OS, you won't notice any diffrence, and with a SMP OS, the diffrence isn't that big cuz the Game itself would only use 1 CPU. I think it'll be fast enough. Not sure about only 64MB RAM. Why not just throw a 256MB in the rig?

ndee,

Voodoo2 SLI is 2 voodoo2 cards connected together, NOT dual cpus. 😉

SLIV2 will be very slow, and only having 64 megs of ram will hurt you even more.

i'm just looking for a decent cheap PCI video card for my friend's hewlett packard (ugh) and was wondering how it would play CS

It will be playable. I had V2SLI in my 733 until a few days ago when I moved them to my 366. You shouldn't have any problems.

Your Voodoo2 SLI will play Counterstrike at 1024x768 admirably. That used to be my main setup and is still working in my spare machine. Definitely upgrade that RAM!!

Budman:

Oops, bummer. I think I read Celery and "2" in one sentence and that confused me.... my bad. I actually read the post more than once.... silly me 😉

But I think it'll be enough. It depends on the resolution. My V2 handled Half-life kinda good with a P233 and 48MB ram. Of course, low resolution.

You shouldn't have any problems.

Quick somewhat-related question.
I heard that the regular voodoo2 cards required a separate 2d card, and that the banshees could render their own 2d. Is this true?

Does CS use the Q2 engine? If so it should rock on a V2SLI setup, with a C733 you should see well in excess of 100fps at 1024x768.

It should run ok...prolly better than my P3 600 with TNT2 M64 32 mb card. That doesn't run at 1024x768 but runs ok on 640x480....arghh!!! I hate my vid card!!

i used to run CS with a single voodoo2 on a celeron 400 with 64 MB RAM at 800x600 and everything turned on. it ran as smooth as silk. you shouldn't have any problems at 1024x768.

Then just get a Voodoo3 3000 PCI card, which goes for about $40 used. That way, you get power similar to Voodoo2 SLI *and* you get built-in 2D acceleration, saving you 2 PCI slots. Voodoo2 SLI requires 2 PCI slots for the Voodoos and 1 for your 2D card. Voodoo3 takes up 1, since it is all-in-one.
