Celeron VS. Duron

I already know that Celerons are notorius for crappy WU production, especially my 700mhz Celeron that takes 12 hours and 30 minutes per unit. My question is... How much of an improvement would I probably see switching to an 800mhz Duron? I'm not expecting lightning fast units from such a slowly clocked chip, but it would be nice to see more than 1-2 units coming from my mail server.

Any info is appreciated. If it sounds like enough of a boost i'll go for it, but I dont wanna go out and buy a new case if it's not going to be worth it. (Only case I have for this chip/mobo would be a FULL atx tower (12 bays) with a 400 watt PSU. Definitely wouldn't fit too easily into my rack shelves.)

Well, i have SETI running on a friends Duron 850, it takes about 8hr, 30min to finish 1 wu, alot better than a celeron :)

I wouldnt say "alot"

900mhz P3 Celerons take about 9-10hrs max. So about 9hrs avg.... and those are with pc 100 ram... so Im guessing they are comparable

now for higher end PC's... a 2ghz Duron would whomp a 2.4ghz P4 Celeron

I think what I'm gonna end up doing is basically redoing my home network.

Currently unused Athlon 1800 (planned on keeping it as just a SETI cruncher, but the power use needs to be a bit more justified) will take over as my mail server, and crunch units as well. Mail services don't take much of anything in the way of system resources, least of all CPU. Current mail server (currently crunching SETI), 700mhz celeron, becomes my new router box. It has more PCI slots that my current router box (500 Celeron... eMachine) so it's worth it there to be able to set up a real DMZ finally.

Then I'll just retire the 500 Celeron box to either my closet, or maybe a doorstop until I can find another use for it.

In other words, I'll be going from needing half a day to crunch a unit to a few hours, maybe 5-6 from what i've seen. One day I *will* get a life!

Yeah, that's what we all said one time or another ... ;)

I'll get One also .... as soon as I can download it on my dial-up service.:disgust:

Providing its small enough so as not to take too long.:D

lol!:)

Btw re Celerons ,there's a partial misconception going about these days;).
As far as SETI goes (& most other stuff):-

Celeron 266-300 (cachless) = sucky WU times:p
Celeron 300A-533 (Descheutes based,Mendicino(?))= ok WU time relative to its MHz ,much better when on 100FSB;)
Celeron 533A-1.1GHz (Coppermine based with crippled bandwidth L2 cache as well as smaller) = poor WU times ,often beaten by previous Celeron!
rolleye.gif

Celeron 1.0A-1.4GHz (Tualatin, virtually a PIII with 256k L2 cache intact!:))= ok WU times at std 100FSB ,very good times when overclocked:) ,often beats next version!

Celeron 1.7(?)-2.4GHz (P4 Will based with smaller cache) = diabolically bad WU times for its MHz!:frown: ,often beaten by previous 2 generations!

I've still got my old Cel 366 ,at 566 MHz ,CAS2 RAM ,BX chipset,103MHz FSB it manages 9.9hrs/WU which isn't bad for what it is:)
My son has a Cel 1.1A (Tualatin) @1.39GHz,CAS2 RAM,BX chipset,126MHz FSB it manages this:-

..............................................................AR............................................................................WU time

Now that's pretty darn good for an SDR RAM rig!:)

Re a Duron 800 ,if you can unlock it & run it on a mbrd with multiplier options & run the FSB at 133MHz that will cut off about 1hr from WU times ,so then you'd be looking at about 7hrs/WU:)
Btw if you want to see how well the latest Durons do with DDR RAM look here

MY Duron 800 mhz running on 333ddr gets around 7 hrs a WU, and my 1.2ghz Celeron gets around 6 hrs.

Is the Celeron on the std 100MHz FSB? ........................why do I have the feeling I've already asked you this in another thread?;)
Nice FSB for a Duron btw:)
