Celeron underclocking

Okay folks, I know someone with a mobo that supports chips up to 500mhz, but he has a 600mhz Celeron chip. What'll happen if he throws it in that board? Will it just not boot? Screw up the proc? Thanks for your info.

Try to find out what chipset the motherboard uses. That would give a better idea of whether or not it will support a Celeron 600.

Chances are that it will, although you will need 2 things. The first is the latest BIOS update to support Coppermine class processors. Assuming that you have a Slot 1 board, then you will need a slotket. The motherboard is unlikely to support the lower voltage required by the new Celerons, so you will have to manually set the slotket's voltage to 1.80 volts, which is usually the minimum voltage older motherboards are capable of supplying.
