celeron notebook questions

My sister is thinking about getting a Celeron 1ghz laptop with 256mb RAM. However, she's wondering if it would be able to run some of her programs - Matlab, Office programs, Visual C++, etc. Will a Celeron be able to cut it?

Is there a huge difference between Celerons and Pentiums?

The Celeron 1ghz is fine for all those applications but in general a pentium 3 is faster. The difference isnt going to big if thats what she's mainly doing.
