Celeron M's

Hi guys, I can get a Celeron M setup for $130 shipped and am wondering how good it will peform. I currently have an Athlon XP 1800 which performs nicely and runs Half-Life 2 on high, but I want a small upgrade for my second machine which will become my primary gaming rig. I currently have 2X256 pc3200 ram and can get a Celeron M 1.6 and Asus P4S800-MX motherboard for $130. The Celeron M has a default 16X100, but the motherboard automatically ups the voltage from 1.15 to 1.65 which allows for very high overclocking at good temps. The seller guarantees a 3.0ghz and possibly 3.2/200. How well would this perform and would it be a nice upgrade? Are there any better cpu/mobo combos for under $135? Thanks for the help.

You don't mean a Celeron M, you mean a Mobile Celeron. Very different distinction.

Oh, and everyone knows exactly who you're talking about - so let's just call it what it is - a Karaktu Celeron.

There's performance links in his threads. And yes, those are very capable systems for gaming. Video editing, no. Gaming? Yes.

I've since passed mine on to my fiancee, so I'm not going to hijack her system for benchmarking and overclocking the snot out of purposes, but I'll tell you that when I did have it, I ran it at 2.13GHz / 512 / 9500Pro, and it handled Doom 3 and HL2 pretty damned well. At 3.0, it would be awfully swift.

They arent bad for general purpose computing, but nothing to write home about in terms of high end performance.

Actualy I think the does mean a celeron M...isn't that the motherboard that comes with Asus's new adaptor that allows you to use a pentium M or Celeron M on a socket 478 desktop board....and yeah at those speeds it would likely perform pretty well, especialy if it's a Dothan based one. On the otherhand if it really is a mobile celeron, it's not gonna perform well at all...

No, and no. This is not a Celeron M, the chip itself with adaptor would cost that much alone. And a Mobile Celeron at those speeds will perform quite well.

Yeah, I am talking about Karaktu's deal. I miatyped though, it is 140 not 130. Still a great deal though. Most people seemed to like it, so I will probably go with it. I think Karaktu promised his special 1.6 will do 3.2. It is $15 more which is the one I am talking about. Any more opinions. How does this stack up against a 2.8/533, any benchies?

ok these are mobile celerons and not celeron m's. well i am much less impressed. i was quite amazed that someone was getting the dothan or banias core to 3.2ghz, thats what i'd like to see. silly intel with their naming scheme....

I can get an Athlon XP mobile and motherboard that does 250 bus stable for $75 shipped. I plan to run it at 200 bus. How would that compare. Here is the link. Don't worry, I already called dibs and the buyer agreed not to sell it to anyone else.
