Celeron/Mobo Question

My friend has an Intel Celeron 1.0 ghz and got a 1.3ghz CPU for free from another guy at work. His current Mobo (some intel one that came w/ his Dell SmartStep 100D) won't boot w/ with the 1.3ghz in the CPU slot. He wants to purchase a Motherboard that will support the CPU, his current ram, AND be able to be upgraded to something near a 2.0 ghz CPU (either P4 or Celery) in the future (tax time ;D).

His what I know:

Current CPU: 1.0ghz Celeron (from Dell SmartStep 100D)
New CPU 1.3ghz Celeron (100mhz BUS, 256KB cache)

Current Mobo: some intel board from previous Dell listed

New Case (larger, more room for expansion)

New PSU (250w)

What he's looking for on the NEW Mobo is:

1.3ghz Celeron compatibility w/ options to upgrade a bit
AGP slot
SDRAM Dimm slots
DDR Dimm slots (if possible, but SDRAM more important to him).

He's on a budget so anything "bang for the buck" would rule.

If you need more info please either PM me or just respond. I'll try to answer any follow ups promptly. Thanks in advance for the assistance. I don't have much experience w/ Intel based CPU's and boards.

Celeron up to 1.4 = socket 370 = P3 coppermine and tualatin
Celeron above 1.4 = socket 478 = P4.
There aren't any motherboards that support both P3 and P4 processors.

The 1.3 probably fails because it's a "tualatin" P3 and his motherboard only supports older "coppermine" P3s.

Better to sell the 1.3 on ebay then to buy a new case, power supply, mobo just for it.

A budget upgrade would be to an Athlon XP 2500+, but this also requires the new case, power supply, DDR RAM and motherboard. Use the search box and type "budget" for many suggested part lists.

1.4 is the fastest Socket370 Celeron. Look for a BIOS update for the Dell, or it might need jumpers or DIP switches changed (unlikely but possible) to support the new CPU.

Most likely no chance of that DELL mobo supporting that tualitin cored cely..Best case scenario would be to get a new case w/PSU and a mobo like an ASUS TUSL2 that supports tualitin processors, Move everything you can from the DELL to the new case(HDD, CD-rom,etc), and re-install OS fresh. Regardless, Your friend will not be able to upgrade to P4/P4-based Celeron with any board designed for socket 370. As stated before, he may be able to sell that 1.3 on eBay or something and put some extra money together for a P4/Celeron-mobo combo and be able to upgrade that later.

Wow, that's for the assistance. What's the highest a 370mobo can support? I mean, he's really strapped for cash and is able to afford RIGHT now, $100. Can he get a mobo to support that 1.3ghz cpu? Just curious, he has a new case and PSU, they're installed fine. Just the damn CPU.. I even got a WD 40gb 7200 8mb installed on the pc.. just the cpu issue. :/

Sooooo.. anyone need a 1.3ghz celery for like $45? ;) If I can get what Newegg sells em for I can at least give him that and tell him to get an older AthlonXP and a mobo that supports SDRAM.. an 1800+ and mobo should be had for under $150 I'm thinking..

Thanks guys, keep the ideas coming!

His mobo probably could support a coppermine celeron 1.1 GHz, but that doesn't seem worth the effort compared to keeping the 1.0 GHz.

A TUSL2-C or other tualatin-compatible mobo would cost $50-80 in FS/FT forum, but selling the Dell, 1.0, 1.3 and buying a XP + mobo combo new (Frys near you?) or in FS/FT makes much more sense. That 250w power supply could be a problem for Athlons though.

Maybe he should just sell the 1.3 and start saving up for a real upgrade

Unfortunately no Fry's.. ugh. I guess we'll see what we can get him on the net to upgrade a bit. His issues now is that the 1ghz celeron is lagging on a good deal of the newer games AND the current mobo has no AGP slot so he's stuck on a Geforce2MX PCI card at the moment. His priorities are to get a new motherboard, cpu, and video card in that order but lacks the funds to really get the mobo+cpu at the same time.

Well, thanks everyone for the answers. I appreciate the assistance.
