I am looking at a low-budget laptop and this took me to the Dell D505. There are five options in processors:

1.3Ghz Celeron M
1.4Ghz Celeron M
1.5Ghz Celeron M

1.4Ghz Pentium M
1.5Ghz Pentium M

The laptop utilizes the Intel 855GME integrated UMA graphics chipset so it's already a little hampered as far as graphics memory, but wondering how the difference in CPU's will affect overall performance.

I'll be doing work-related stuff only - Word, Excel (no macros), surfing the net. Limited video playback. Will I be okay with the Celeron 1.3Ghz?

IIRC, Tom's Hardware (or maybe it was anandtech) did a celeron-m vs pentium-m comparison not so long ago, and the performance difference wasn't huge. Like, the discreptancy (sp) was far less than that of the P4-celeron vs p4 or the p3-celeron vs p3 from a few years back. If you're not goign to be doing any cpu-intensive operations, then there's no reason why the celeron-m 1.3 or 1.4 wouldn't serve your purposes. Esp if you're looking to save $$ :)

I got the 1.3Ghz Celeron M with a 512MB RAM upgrade from Crucial. I figure with only 512KB cache, it won't be able to use 1GB RAM effectively anyway....and what can a 1.3Ghz Celeron do anyway?

Thanks for your input. It helped me decide.

Great! I'm glad I could be of service. And yeah, the 512mb upgrade was definitely a good move. Esp for just desktop applications, I really don't see you needing any more than that...512 is a pretty safe number.
