Celeron M on Laptops

Should I stick with a Celeron M, or add another 50 odd quid (£50) to get the Pentium M?

• Intel® Pentium® M 725A Processor (1.6GHz 2MB L2 cache 400MHz FSB) & shared graphics memory

• Intel® Celeron® M 360(1.40GHz 1MB L2 cache 400MHz FSB)& up to 128MB shared graphics memory

This is for my sister, and I'm lookin to give her as cheap as possible deal for her. She will probably only use it for emails, MSN, watching DVDs, playing music, doing college work only. Is Pentium M really worth that much more money?

Celeron D isn't dual core... its a naming gimmick.

Doesn't relate to this post, just saying be sure you know what you're getting before you buy it.

No they're not, they perform very similar to the previous generation Banias P-Ms but only lack SpeedStep. However, since the Dothan core has very good leakage characteristics, you still get reasonable battery life in typical usage.

So I should opt for the Celeron and save £50 in your opinion? ...and how much of a difference is the battery life, is it an hour or over on average?

celeron m is by far the best celeron....(typed on a celeron m laptop)

If cost is a concern, I doubt your sister will be able to tell the difference given the type of activities she's going to use the laptop for.

<--- I'd agree with this (cringes as he reccomends a celeron....) They are good for cost concerns, and I guess the m is okay, never would have reccomended any desktop celeron. 🙂

Yes, 50 bucks is a big deal. So just go ahead and get a Celery. Your sister won't even be able to tell the difference. Probably not even you or me unless we can some tests.

I swapped my celeron M 1.3ghz for a Pentium M 1.7ghz and really couldnt tell the difference except that the 1.7 throttles like mad and the battery lasts a lot longer. So save your 50 pounds and get more memory! 🙂

Celeron Ms are crap - you'll hear a lot of folks around here saying otherwise while using synthetic benchmarks from Tom's and elsewhere for backup but I support both the Ps and and Cs everyday of my working life and I'm here to tell ya the Celerons aren't even in the same ballpark. - If you're an old granny who just needs to check your email and play an occasional game of minesweeper then get the Celey but for anyone else the Cel is a piece of garbage.
