Celeron M how slow compared to P4 at twice the speed

Am I missing something or are the Celeron M processors in the latest laptops total dogs as far as performance. I mean how does a Celeron M 360 1.4Ghz compare to a P4-800 for instance. For that matter how does it compare to a 2.4 Ghz Celeron. Why are these laptop processors so slow?

uh. Never heard of a P4 800 you mean 2800?? As for the celery, they are less stellar performers than the Pentium M chips, but still much better than the desktop Celerons. The main difference between and Celeron M and a Pentium M is that the celery doesn't have the best powe management, and is slightly slower with less cache.

My understanding was that the P M are actually very good performers with a 1.4 ghz P M out performing a 2.2-2.4 ghz P 4 hands down. There was some issues with putting them in desktops (besides the price) but otherwise they are very fast cpu's. I hear the new dual core version (yonah?) is supposed to be extrememly fast. We shall see...

I wouldn't call celeron M's performance less steller. There almost as good as Pentium Ms. Kinda like comparing Venices to Sandiegos.

all a celeron M is a 400Fsb Pentium M with out some of the power management and only 1MB cache. They still pwn anything in its clock range besides an A64 and a P-M.

So I am assuming the Celeron M and Pentium M are about the same Celeron being a little slower but how do they compare to their desktop brothers. I guess I am looking for a rough equivalency between the desktop P4 chips and the M chips. It seems the M chips are faster than their clock speed would indicate. I have a laptop with the Old P4 based Celeron 2.4Ghz chip and its does a respectable job on most tasks. It seems to be able to handle everything my P4 2.8 Desktop can handle although a little slower. I have seen laptops with the Celeron M 1.4 for like $400 would is be faster of slower than my 2.4 Celeron based laptop. I have no feel for it. I have not seen any M to P4 performance comparisons but it seems it would be a cool thing to do.

Depending on the application, a 1.4GHZ Celeron M with 1MB cache will generally be about as fast as a 2.4 P4.
