Celeron M 1.6 v. Centrino M 1.7

I just bought my GF a Inspiron B130 after I killed her old laptop. It came off ebay with a Celeron 1.6ghz M cpu, which seems fine for all intents (she had a 1.3ghz P4 in her Inspiron 4150 its replacing, so its two fold faster).

I have a Centrino M 1.7ghz from another laptop that died that I know is still good. Would it be worth the effort to swap them?

For performance? Probably not. For battery life? Definately.

There is no such thing as a Centrino processor. The processor is either a Pentium M or a Core Solo. If it's a Core Solo, the upgrade is not possible. If the laptop maker did something funny, like solder the processor to the motherboard, the upgrade is not possible.

As Zap stated, the performance difference would not be huge, but battery life would be helped a fair amount.

Correct. "Centrino" is a platform consisting of CPU, chipset and WiFi all made by Intel and of certain combinations (for instance a notebook with a Celeron cannot be called Centrino, but can be "Centrino Ready").

If it's a Pentium M it should just drop in. I put a 745 in my B130 last year. On top of the extra L2 cache the Pentium M has power saving where the Celeron doesn't.

It is worth it to go with the pentium m just for the increased battery life. Mine was almost doubled when I went from a 1.4 celeron m to a 1.7ghz pentium m. It does have double the cache so that will give a little performance boost.

I did research on this a while back, going from 1m to 2m L2, combined with lower latency L2, seems to boost performance 5-10% @ same mhz.

As others have said, it should run cooler (throttling) which is a huge help. I have a buddy who also has a B130 w/Celeron 1.6, and it gets so damned hot it turns itself off. I believe the Pentium-M will just downclock to avoid shutting down, right?
