Celeron M 1.4 vs Pentium 4 2.8

My brother is in the market for a cheap computer. His question: how much of a difference is there between the Celeron M 1.4 and the Pentium 4 2.8?

He's done searches on Google, but all the answers he can find are "Celeron sucks," "P4 is better." Are there any benchmarks for comparison? Tom's Hardware has an interesting article about how the Celeron M is comparable to the Pentium M. Other articles say that the Pentium M is comparable to the P4. So is the Celeron M comparable to the P4?

Thanks

I'm assuming you're building a desktop computer since you said your brother wants a cheap one. I don't believe you can use a Celeron M in a normal cheaper desktop motherboard but need a more expensive Intel 855GME based motherboard which would make your computer considerably more expensive.

Celeron Ds are for desktop use and can use cheap desktop motherboards.

Actually, I'm talking about both. Sorry. Here's some clarification. At hot deals forums around the net, he found both a desktop and a laptop for around $500 each. The major difference is the processor (and the fact that the desktop comes with a 17" LCD). Since we are techie noobies, we still have this impression that desktops will always be more price efficient than laptops. This is why we are hesitant about getting the laptop, since we feel there's a "catch" to it.

The Celeron in any flavor is a budjet CPU and is not meant to be as fast as its bigger brother, the P4 2.8 would beat the 1.4 Celeron M, your talking 1.2 GHz higher in frequency not to mention (HT,more cache, higher FSB) although less IPC's. The frequency difference it too great. The reason people bash the Celeron is because of the low ammount of L2 cache on board the die, the P4's cache is all the difference with its performance.

isn't the celeron-m a Pentium-m with half the cache and 400mhz fsb? If so they might be somewhat close.

not really. the celeron m is somewhat comparable to a duron of the same frequency. the p4 2.8 is faster.

A64 3000 skt 754 is cheaper and faster than both...

not to mention the possibilites if he ever decides to overclock. every 100 mhz you OC an A64 = 150Mhz p4

a celeron M is a pentium with 1/2 the cache and reduced speed step performance. it is very close to the same speed. it is a much more powerful CPU Mhz fpr Mhz than a P4 especialy in the FPU department. a 2.0 pentium can beat a 3.6 P4 in things like gaming but will be slower in things like encoding.
