I got two combos sitting around(not buying anything) that I am wanting to put together for someone who plays Diablo 3 and WoW mostly. Performance wise which would be best? The Celeron will be running 8gb DDR3 where the Athlon II x4 will be on 4gb DDR2.

They're both far less than ideal. Any chance of returning or selling them, and picking up a G3258 combo? Or even a Haswell i3?

Gaming, eh? What video card? That'll mean more on either machine... leaning towards the faster Celly with more RAM.

D3 and WoW I think the g1620 is better, for games like Battlefied 4 I think the Athlon would win.

Will be running a lower end r9 270. It's going to be mostly blizzard stuff gaming wise. But they may move on to newer games. However they don't require max settings. Is the g3258 a lot better than both?

I like the idea of selling off some of the stuff for a better CPU.
Keep the current Intel MOBO and 8GB RAM.

That's socket 1155 yeah? Should be lots of good used options, i3-i5 at 3.5GHz or so would be nice with an R9-270. You can actually get a new i3-32xx for $100.

Depending on the board you got, any sandy w/ turbo can do an extra +400MHz even without a k model...so a used i5 for ~100$ could be desirable.

Problem with the 3258 is that it requires a new MOBO and is still just dual core.
For the ~$150 or so it would cost for the MOBO/CPU it'd be better getting an i3/i5 that works in his current MOBO and getting more threads/cores.

For Blizzard games, definitely the Intel CPU. As others have said, ~$30 buys you a decent improvement, but you should probably see how the games run on what you have first.

...not to mention that the Celly not only has DDR3 (not ancient DDR2) and more of it, it's got a very nice upgrade path that can be picked up pretty cheap (if you're lucky and catch a good used deal!)

Non-overclocking CPUs seem to last forever - I never fear buying one used!
