Celeron for work -Yay or nay?

My Dad needs a new computer for work. It will probably only be used for word processing, instant messenging, and some light web browsing.

I know Celerons suck, but I was thinking of just getting one of those cheapo Dell 3000s for $400. Any reason why I should upgrade to the P4 Dell for another $200? His computer probably won't be running Vista anytime soon.

Celeron D chips are not that bad for those applications (make sure not to get an older non-D celeron!)

However, I was looking at the Dell 3000 for my mother-in-law -- apparently it doesn't offer a video slot of any kind! Not AGP or PCIe. You will be stuck with VGA integrated graphics forever, and no hope for a DVI port.

I have also found that upping the RAM, disk, and other stuff made a Dell 3000 cost as much as a 5100 with similar equipment, which is still too expensive. I am going to build a box using a Cel-D and an Intel motherboard for best stability.

Celerons do not suck. And it would be more than fine for what your Dad is doing.
My wife has a Northy core 2.0GHz Celeron in her computer. She does a lot of photo editing and scanning. Works fine and she has zero complaints about speed.
Celerons only suck to enthusiasts, which AT is mostly filled with. 😉

a cleery 2.4 should be comparable to the northy at 2.0 unless you run a lot of multimedia apps. then, a 2.8 or more would be comparable.

Go Sempron instead! Actually, probably wouldn't find any sempron systems as cheap unless you built it yourself.

And if it's a Celeron D, go for it, those are pretty good performance wise..if an older Celeron...eh, you may be better just giving him any old computer you have lieing around, the fastest duron was like 1.6ghz and destroys any of those old celerons, even at above 2.6ghz.(did the old celerons go much above 2.6ghz anyhow?)
Or get him a $500 laptop with Celeron M or Sempron.
