Celeron D 331 (2.66 GHz)--56 C idle temp normal?

I did a system build today, and wanted to run the idle temp by you guys to make sure it was normal/safe. BIOS hardware monitor says ~56 C idle. Motherboad is an Intel DG965OT. CPU is a retail Celeron D 331 2.66 GHz. I used the stock heatsink/fan since I'm not overclocking. This may be painfully obvious, but just to make sure, the gray "stuff" that is pre-applied to the heatsink is thermal paste right? So I was right for just mounting the heatsink to the CPU right out of the box.

This is my first time working with a latest gen Intel processor, so I don't know what it normal for my setup. 56 C just seems a little high--can I trust its accuracy? Should I try remounting the heatsink?

Yeah, seems mad high to me!

I'm in Arizona (102F outside - 88F inside) with sweat running down my brow, and my P4 EE says...
Field Value
CPU 36 °C (97 °F)
I'd give it a remount...

Before you totally freak out.....try some other temp monitoring software, like speedfan. Or put your finger at the base of the heatsink. 56C will feel too hot to touch for very long. If the heatsink is cool, you may really have a connection issue.

was there a plastic film between the thermal compound and the cpu?
that hsf should keep your temps at 36 to 45 must be a mounting issue see bluefronts post if the hsf is cool you need a remount just be sure to remove the crappy grey paste and reapply some good thermal paste.
