Celeron D 2.4

Okay I finally got around to building my Celeron rig.

It's a Soyo board and a Celeron D 2.4ghz proc. I left the thermal film alone and it was reaching 80+ and my board turned it off to avoid it going into flames. I tried wiping the film, then applying my thermal paste. it's still 72-73 degrees celsius. this is abnormal. im using a retail proc and its stock cpu fan. and the case not even closed!

what am i doing wrong? 🙁

Where are you getting the 72-73 degree Celsius reading from? The bios? I would Google your board and see if there are any problems with accurate temperature readings.

Next, I would take the cpu out, remove all the thermal compound with rubbing alcohol 97%+ pure to ensure it is all gone and reapply a tiny amount of the thermal compound and spread even and thinly.

Next, place your hand on the heatsink while in the bios. Is the heatsink warm, hot, or blistering. If it is cool while the bios says it should be toasty hot, you know the bios is not functioning properly.

Edit: Make sure the fan is blow down toward the cpu on the heatsink. (I know that seems obvious, but one time my computer wouldn't start and after ten minutes of frantic checking I realized it was unplugged LOL)

i think i foundd out why its so hot

i broke one of the levers on the stock fans and now one side of the heatsink is not snug or tightly pressuring the CPU. when i force my hand on the heatsink a little bit. i see temperature drop from 70 to 55

its pretty sad, i would hate to see that heatsink go to waste. what's a good replacement heatsink for this?

thanks

Most simple coolers are at least an equal replacement for a stock cooler. Not sure if you can simply buy a replacement lever/stock HSF, aside from maybe eBay. That said, poke around at Newegg, FrozenCPU, and others see what decent HSF's you can find.

If you are inclined, you could probably jury rig something as well, but thats a little risky. 😛
