Celeron Cooling Question

I've got an older machine around my house, and I was going to add it to my LAN to play stuff such as starcraft, warcraft 2, age of empires, nothing even remotely 3D. Anyway, I was experementing with placing the CPU fan in a different place, and I kinda broke off a blade So the tiny little fan is pretty much unusable now because of the noise. My question is this; If the processor i'm running is a socket 370, 400 MHz Celeron, could I run it safely with just the heatsink? the heatsink measures 2 inches in height. And if I were to get a 733 MHz celeron to replace the 400 MHz down the road, could it too be passively cooled?

EDIT: The only other fan in the entire case is the PSU fan, there are air holes in the side of the case, and the PSU draws some air current out.

A cpu can't be passively cooled unless it has an absolutely huge heatsink, or is underclocked, or both. But, even with a huge aftermarket heatsink, you're gonna be required to have case airflow (fans). Why not just spend $5 at Fry's or newegg for a replacement?

A lot of Dells, Compaqs, etc had only heat sinks--no fans. I have several PIII 500s running only heat sinks for the last 5 years. Give it a try or add a little fan for $5. I wouldn't buy an expensive setup, it's not needed. R

yea, im gonna get a socket 370 pIII and a heatsink/fan combo to cool it, thanks for the input You're prolly right, if there's no airflow, im riskin it

wow, i ran that thing w/o a fan for about 10 minutes, put my finger on it, and i swear, it was hot enough to fry an egg!

Hehe, maybe it's worth something without a fan, then.

I had a 1.0a celerom (tualatin) which could run passively using a pep66 heatsink

BUT the power supply fan and/or case fan was either pulling or push air across them. So they were not 100% fanless, they juts shared another system fan. That and the heatsink's are usually larger then a standard heatsink with fan.

I didn't mean they had no fan in the entire box. The power supply fan was the only fan, and it was about 12" from the processor. R
