Hi again,

Thanks for the help with memory for the Compaq.
Now on to another question:
The Presario 5474 has an i810E-DC100 chipset. In an earlier review at Anandtech it was written that this chipset does support 100MHz FSB but it was not activated (or something). The Celeron 800 with 100MHz FSB would be a nice uppgrade!
Would this work? Anyone tried/knows?

Hey,
The PDF file Compaq had wasn't any help.
I don't suppose your owners manual has any jumper settings.:Q
Why don't you post the Bios string and maybe we can figure out who made the board.

Hey,

OK, working on it. Might take some time. If 100MHz FSB works... why not get a full PIII !?
On the other hand, this chipset doesn't have any AGP port so no cool graphics cards here.
Considering a PCI card (Geforce 2 MX) but wouldn't the PCI bus be very limiting?

These forums are great, many helpful members.

Can you reboot & hold your finger over the pause key.
When words start appearing on the screen hit pause,
then you might get a chance to write them down.
Hit enter to keep going.
Sometimes they throw a splash screen up there so you can't read this stuff.
F1 might clear the "Compaq flash screen".
Sorry I can't be more specific. Just guessing.

Your problem is it's a Compaq! My sister got screwed with a Compaq pisario, they suck. I was looking at it, you cannot control anything with the motherbord, you are stuck with the 66Mhz fsb as there is no way to change it. You can't even disable the crapy Intel 810E video. Bottom line, Stay as far as you possible can from Compaq in the future.
