Celeron 633 @ 950 @ 1.85v +GORB - Unreal Tourney Stability problems

I've got this celeron 633 running at 950 at 1.85volts pretty stable w/ a golden orb and some cheap thermal compound (but not the GOrb stuff), on an ABit BE6 w/ the newest bios, and some mushkin PC133 ram... my temps when playing UT go up to around 120F.. not terribly high, but I keep getting GPFs, game crashes, and once in a while system crashes.. i dunno what's wrong.. i replaced my old P3 450 @ 520 with this setup, and the P3 never once had a problem.. any ideas?

Mine runs at 92 with normal use, and I don't game so I don't know how hot it would get with Unreal. But 120 seems too high. Try regooping it, and make sure you have good Gorb to CPU contact. It should be stable. How about your video card?

I doubt if it is the temp. Most likely the chip is not 100% stable at that speed and voltage. I have built several celly 633@950 systems recently, and many of them need 1.9 volts to be truly stable...

Hi!!!

What do you think my chances are of getting a Celermine128 633 that will pull off 950 stable? I plan on getting an Asus CUSL2 and using the stock heatsink on the retail Celeron (I am willing to up to a GORB or retail hs/fan if necessary).

My other option is getting an Abit kt7 and a Duron 700 retail and going for 950 as well... it's cheaper... but I've read problem after problem after problem with setting up boards based on the kt133 chipset :(

Thanks for your opinion! :)

I am not that familiar with that board, but I am pretty sure that you can hit 950 at 1.9 volts or less. I have built like 10 of them, and with the stock heatsink/fan they ALL hit 950.....

Well, I bumped up the voltage to 1.9v on my slocket, set the bios to default.. registered as 1.9v.. played UT for about an hour, and it seems to be going fine.. only problem is my temp maxxes out at 49deg C now.. kinda high.. this is with a GOrb and some cheap thermal grease.. is this a normal temp? ambient is 36deg in this room (AC works in every room but this one.. sigh).. would Arctic Silver grease drop the temp down a few degrees? any other help/hints for more stablilty and/or lower temps? thanks:)

i will vouch for the duron. built 3 duron rigs w/ retail cpus and stock heatsinks/fans and they all did 950 stable. 1 did 978 stable and the best one is at 990 stable.
none seem to hit that 10 multiplier though :(

al were setup w/ kt7-raid mobo's too btw- easy setup, no probs.

By your figures, you are only 25 degrees F. above ambient, which should be just fine. Gotta cool off that room, though, if only for yourself- forget the computer!

Like I posted elsewhere, the FCPGA celerons are rated by Intel up to 85 degrees clecius, so 49 is not too high. That being said the systems I have built run about 46-47 c under full load with the stock heatsink/fan, so I think you should be able to lower your temp with a GORB....

yeah.. i'm guessing it's the hot-ass ambient temp in here that's making it where it is.. i HAVE a GOrb on there.. and it's still running that hot.. is Arctic Silver worth the money? and i guess i should start making a few case mods.. adding a fan or two.. sigh.. didn't want to get into overclocking again:) oh well.. time to do it:)

Just picked up a Cel633 from buy.com (9/5/00 pack date). Havn't had time to wring it out much, but it's running 950 @1.65 temps around 33C running Final Reality (yes, I know it's old and not a good benchmark anymore :) Around 25C idle using Rain. My PIII-700 runs in the 45-47C range under load and 32C idle. Using ASUS P3B-F and an Alpha Pal35 and Artic Silver. One more point in the wide variety of Cel2 performances. Oh, temps are based on CPU as reported by ASUS Probe software. Lark

If your CPU seems to be running stable at 120F, quit worrying about it. There is no way to reliably compare temperatures from one person's system to the next. As long as your system doesn't crash, the temperature is OK. Yeah, perhaps the lifespan of the chip will be reduced from 10 years to five, do you really care?

If your system is running stable, why start putting in cases fans and stuff--that's for folks that can't get stable.

if you get blue screens, GPF's, your system isn't stable, period.

I have the same problem with my 633/950 setup. I tested it with Prime95 for an hour, it runs Quake3 and Falcon 4.0 without problems at 1.8v. But UT will not even start. When I hit the play button I get an error message. Tested up to 1.85v which is as high as my MB goes with the same results, can't even get into the opening movie.

dont worry about heat! no lockups = great system!

btw - i was getting random lockups when browsing the web but since i
did a new win98 install no more lockups and i gained 5 fps in Q3...
also, i am running about 125F-130F...
