For anyone else, I know this has been discussed a little bit a while back, but now that some people have really experimented with chips, I want a more up-to-date opinion...

I have a Cel450A + BH6 1.01... I need a cheap CPU upgrade. Period. 😛
What is my best bet, pricewise? I'll figure that out if you guys can tell me what EQUALS what?
A Cel 566A (or 600 is if overclocks to 100fsb reliably) is equal to WHAT processors?
1)___ P3 (not overclocked)
2)___ Duron (not overclocked)
3)___ T-Bird (as above)

A Duron or T-bird is really cheap, but incurs the price of a new mobo. I can weigh that into my own consideration...
Also of note is my video card of choice. The Voodoo5. 🙂

If the darned "Crush" boards would only come out, there would be no question as to my choice. 🙂 As it is, there's NO imbedded video worth even considering parting with my V5 for. (Would be nice though, this card could completely pay for a CPU upgrade!)

 
Keep in mind that if you go AMD you've got to worry about..power supply, ram, and on ad nausem.

Generally a Celeron II is the equivalent of a PIII of approx 200mhz less. I'm not sure how they stack up at 100mhz FSB as every comparison I've read has the CII at 66mhz.

For a no hassle upgrade you can't beat a CII @100mhz. Most any 566 will hit 850 on nearly any BX board using a Slotket with adjustable voltage.

BTW, I've got 2 of them going..😉
 
Well, I've seen benchmarks of a Celeron 800/100 so extrapolating from that I would say...

Celeron 566/850=
Duron 650
Pentium3 550E
T-Bird 550

Even with the 100MHz FSB a Celery is getting beaten silly by a Duron in the benches I've seen, so these are the clostest estimations I can give.

IMHO a Celery even after overclocking isnt worth the money, if you don't want to buy a new mobo to go with an AMD processor than spend the extra for a P3.

Man, I've been looking for a post like this for a while. Anybody want to guess what my Celeron II 566 -> 952 (112 x 8.5) is equivilant to in terms of a PIII, Duron and Thunderbird. I'm contemplating upgrading to a Duron.
 
celeron 533 may be a better path then 566 ...

the chances of getting the 533 to 112mhz at 896 are about the same as getting a 566 to 100mhz at 850 ...

the 533@896 is a better peformer then a 566@950 due to both the clock speed and bus speed

i'd really vote for a duron or tbird though ... as i have a duron system and a celeron533 system ... and the duron 700@950 or at 1000 is much much faster then my celeron at 896

but the cost of a mobo may make it not worth your while ... and i understand that
 
I'd say something around the 600-700+MHz range with either P3/Athlon/Durons. Personally I have a C566@850 and it runs everything I throw at it pretty fast...no complaints.
 
I have used a 566@850 on a BH6 at 1.6 volts and a cheap adapter with no problems. I bought a boxed processor and used the stock fan. I have tried two 566s and they both overclocked fine, but you alway risk getting a bad one and being stuck at 566. The Duron/new motherboard is better, but not what I would call a cheap upgrade. Try the Celeron or even a PIII 700. I wouldn't try to run it over a 100 MHz bus on the BH6. Rick

Couple discrepencies though.... the numbers REALLY seem to vary! MOST people seem to agree that a Celeron 566(850) is roughly equal to a P3 650-700, but one guy says only 550! Whoa.... Big difference!

If there was a "Crush" board with onboard GF2 MX video, I'd HAPPILY sell this V5-5500 and get a T-bird. 🙂 If only... if only....

A T-bird and motherboard would cost me $300 Canadian ($200US) minus whatever I can get for my Celly/BH6 combo.
Wheras a Celeron2 plus a slocket is only about $110 ($70US). The P3's cost over $200 for the CPU alone... 🙁

I'm not 100% sure if my Enlight 7200 desktop case (235w PS) is Athlon approved, either... 🙁

I'm beginning to think P3 or Celeron is my only options, and 533 or 566 is certainly the cheapest choice. 🙂

I won't be doing anything until after tax returns, so maybe someone will be desperate to sell old Slot1 chips by then, or P3's will just be cheaper in general.


 
I've got two celly 600's, one running at 900 and the other at 950. They haul ass. From the various benches I've seen, these are roughly equivalent to somewhere between a PIII 700 and 750, so say 733. The guy that says PIII 550 is smoking crack. Anybody can come on here and blurt out their opinion, you've got to weed those people out. The consensus in this thread is somewhere between 700 and 750, and that's what I've seen on my machines. Definately a nice processor for the $.
 
I love AMD so I would have to say a Duron 800, you should be able to overclock that to 1gig+.

It's a damn shame there isn't a board with integrated Geforce2 MX, surely it's not that difficult with the MX's low power consumption...if only someone would come up with it.

Well that's the bit that bigs me.... the nVidia "Crush" chipset was in the testing phase... then just disappeared! :| I wanted one....
 
I have a Celeron 566@850 mhz. I play a lot of Counter-Strike and Quake 3 Arena and it does this very well. Counter-Strike is at 1024x768 and Quake 3 Arena is at 1024x768 as well.

If I were you I would do the easy upgrade to a Celeron and run it @ fsb 100. By doing this you can wait with your "major" upgrade and see whatever happens when palomino arrives!

What you really should tell us is what you are using your computer for? Gaming, Normal office/surfing or ??

Anandtech had an article about 6 months ago comparing the C566@850 to many CPUs. For the $$ you can't go wrong if you already have a BX motherboard. Rick
 
i love my c2 566...mines running happily at 1020+ Mhz. besides...current vid cards are bandwidth limited at 1024*768*32 so no atter what processor you have..it wont make a difference...
 
Here is Anands review of the overclocked celeron vs. a lot of other CPU's: Benchmark

In Quake 3 Arena the Celeron 850 performs a little higher than a PIII 700 mhz.

When you look at 1024x768x32bit it does not matter how fast your cpu is.

All I need now is to sell my Cel450A (300A@100fsb perfect!) and grab one. I can't get a 566 though, he only has 600's and up... Should I go retail for a built-in heatsink/fan or cheap OEM and some sort of cooling?
 
Mine runs at 850 mhz with standard intel HSF. It can do 892 mhz stable as well. At 936 mhz (110 fsb) it runs stable in every stability test in windows, but it crashes in Counter-Strike after a while.

But get a good HSF and get a 600 or 633 mhz celeron, you could buy a pretested celeron 633 that does 950 mhz.
