Celeron 566 @805 Increasing voltage requirements!

I have a Celeron 566 running at 850 at 1.85 V for over a month now and it is running stable although it can do 1.8V but the .05 is needed in order to run Q3 smoothly. Yesterday, i decided to change the default HSF so that it would run cool, so i modified a generic no name HS and attached a considerably fast fan on it (with thermal compound of course!)made sure that it touches the core nicely. Then I decided to bump the FSB to 105 MHz and the voltage to 1.9, but i never got it to do run windows so i reset my computer to 100MHz and 1.85V. But since then whenever i run Q3 it locks up after a few demo loops (Q3Demo)! But when i set the voltage to 1.9 it runs stable but the problem is the extra heat and of course the high voltage(full load at 45C).

Here are the questions!

Is it possible that my celeron now wants a higher voltage? Previously it is stable at 1.85V now it wants 1.9V after i tried to set it at 1.9V & 105Mhz?

Is it possible to go back to the 1.85V after a burn-in period of say 1 month?

Is the voltage to high or what?

I really have a good HSF i think it is better than the Golden Orb! I think it is at par with the Globalwin FKP32 (did i get the model right?) for only around $6!

Please help overclocking GURUS!

If you put on a too thick layer of compound it will isolate the heat and you CPU will only get hotter than before. That could be your problem.

You might have too much compound on it, you want just a thin film on it. I have a 566 runing at 933 at 1.75 and one running 880 at 1.70 Heat seems to be the big issue on the 566. When it gets hot it likes to crash with heavy 3D games. So make sure you have good airflow in th ecase also. test it without the sides on and see if it helps.

I run my 533A@800 at 2.0 volts.

Anybody go higher than that. Yes, I know that the spec. from Intel says 2.1 maximum, etc.

Anyway, 1.9 is fine; my stuff ain't broke yet.

damn I must have a good 566 then, I can run mine at 850 (875 with turbo) at 1.65v and its stable as hell in all 3d games etc, I have some artic paste and a golden orb.

When you're rolling your own -- it's easy to get the HS/fan touching one edge of the CPU too tightly, leaving a gap at the other edge. Also consider Artic Silver or Circuit Works Silver Thermal Coumpound. The type of Thermal Grease does make a difference.
