Can i use a celeron 400 CPU on a 440 EX/LX motherboard?

I am currently running a PII-233 on the mobo.

Yes, you can run all of the PPGA processors on there if its a Socket-370. If its a Slot-1 then you can run up to the Slot-1 Celeron 500. (The 533mHz version was for the PPGA/S370 crowd only.) Just know that FC-PGA is not PPGA. The PPGA Celerons top out at 533mHz.

Slot 1 Celerons topped out at 466, and were available only as OEM processors, not as retail boxed packages. Retail Slot 1 Celerons are available up to 433MHz.

Socketed Celerons in PPGA format are available up to 533MHz. It is unlikely that your motherboard will support FC-PGA celerons. You can use socketed Celerons in a Slot 1 motherboard using a slotket.

Make sure that you have the latest BIOS update for your motherboard before you upgrade.

dopcombo: to answer your question directly, the answer is yes....usually.

Hmm.... i tested it out with my friend's PPGA celeron 400 on a MSI slocket.

My mobo is indeed intended for slot 1 CPUs.

The computer didn't even post.
pls advise. :)

Just saw Andyhui's comment on updating bios.
problem is i bought my computer when i was a computer illiterate and i bought a whole set from gateway.

Problem: I have no idea what model my motherboard is, and which company made it.

It is a phoenix BIOS though, but i dunno where to find the upgrade.

Doh! You're right. And its been so long since PPGA was out I forgot to mention the PPGA-to-Slot1 adapters (slotkets). I was thinking the 500mHz came out in Slot1, but I remember using a slotket with one. :p

So, what we are saying now is to get the 533mHz Celeron and a Slotket. :)

sigh.

just to inform all of you though, since you guys thought that it would work.
oh well.

That's not quite true.

As long as you have the latest BIOS update for that board (and you should be able to find one on the Gateway website), it should handle a Celeron.

The reason that they give 333MHz as the highest is because the Pentium II on the 66MHz FSB only goes up to 333MHz, and requires mutliplier settings.

The Celeron does not need multiplier settings, so it should work, so long as you have the latest BIOS.

Plus the typical Gateway computer uses a generic BIOS from Intel just fine. Save the old BIOS then flash to a generic Intel version that supports Celerons at 533mHz. My old Spacewalker board never officially supported Celerons but I used one of their BIOS upgrades from a different LX motherboard and everything worked like a charm.
