Celeron 2 compatability

Let me state flat out that I'm a cheap bastard. Having said that, here's
my quandry.

My wife's machine is an old MU440EX based machine that I cobbled together from
odds and ends. The MU440EX was intended for the old Slot 1 Celerons and 66MHz bus
P2s. I slapped a cheap, non-overclockable Celeron 366 onto a slocket and it's been
running that way for about 2 years.

Now I'd like to give it some more steam, but without replacing everything. PCNut has
non-overclockable Celeron 2s and Iwill slockets that look like they might do the job.

But I have 2 reservations. First, I know that Celeron 2 requires a lower voltage. I've
read that the Iwill slocket can reduce voltage on BX boards from 2.whatever to the 1.7 or so
that the Celeron 2 needs. Am I asking for trouble relying on the slocket to reduce voltage?

Second, Intel has stopped supporting this board with BIOS updates. Will an FCPGA processor even
be recognized by an older board? Or does the use of the FCPGA processor require a BIOS upgrade?

I'd be interested in hearing anyone's experiences, either positive or negative.

Thanks

Slockets don't truly reduce the voltage. They trick the motherboard into providing a lower voltage. So if the motherboard itself is not capable of providing the proper voltage, the slocket won't help you.

why is your 366 celly non-overclockable?? doesnt your mobo have jumpers to change the FSB speeds?? those old 366 cellys are famous for clocking up to 550 mhz and beyond , some up to 616+

I bought it from Azzo. They would sell their Celerons that
wouldn't overclock to cheap bastards like me.

On top of that, the motherboard is straight from Intel, so no overclockability
there. Finally, the EX is/was the value replacement for the LX. 66MHz only :(

Based on what Viper says, I'm guessing I'd just fry the C2 by trying. So my options
are spending more for a PPGA Celeron, or totally throwing out the current mobo.

Since I'm not ready to do that, I guess my wife only gets a 500 and no SSE.

I'd just like to say that I have a Celeron 2 600mhz chip that I managed to get up to 900mhz and actually could go up to 1180mhz if I wanted to risk it. I've had no problems with the 900mhz.

I think maybe your wife should consider upgrading her husband. I'm just kidding! ;)
