Celeron 1Ghz on 440BX with a Socket 370 adapter?

I have an old system running a 500mhz PIII and I am wondering if it would be worth my while
to upgrade the CPU to a Celeron 1Ghz chip via a socket 370 adapter. This system is very
stable and I use it for digital audio production as well as some minor web design. For hardcore
use, I have two Athlon boxes that are more suited for more high performance tasks.

So, my questions are...

1) Can I run one of the newer Celeron's on a 440BX motherboard with a socket 370 adapter?
2) Will a 1Ghz Celeron be faster than a PIIIe series CPU (700, 750, or 800mhz)?

Thanks in advance for any and all help...

yes but get a good quality slocket which allows manual voltage setting as you may have to use 1.8V, to get things working.
if you're budget can stretch then you can get one of the powerleap adaptors!

Some BX boards can do it, some can not. What is the mfgr and model of the motherboard?

I'm running a Celeron 900 @ 1Ghz on Asus P2B rev 1.02 using a Shuttle adaptor (at $8.50, it's cheap and it works). Core voltage is set at 1.8V on the slocket and fsb is set at 112 Mhz on the motherboard. You don't have to mess with the multiplier.

Not only you don't have to mess with the multiplier, you simply cannot mess with the multiplier. Intel factory-locked all of its cpus.

a) why not go straight up for celeron 1.1ghz? :) if your mobo supports cumines, you should get a cumine slotket adaptor and it should work (p2b yes)
b) a celeron usually needs around ~250mhz in order to "beat" a PIII, i.e. a celeron 1ghz should be able to "beat" a p3 750
however, there are many programs that utilize 2x the cache that PIII's have (256kb) than the 128kb celerons

I have an Abit BH6 with a P3 700e. It runs the 124 FSB just fine, but I can not get it to run at 133 FSB.
Still, at 124 FSB it runs a nice fast 868Mhz and is a very powerful upgrade from my old Cel 300A @ 450.
