Celeron 1.3GHz heat issues?

My friend has a Compaq with a Celeron 1.3GHz and the
thing had a K6-2 era type of Coolermaster heatsink.
His system has been crashing a lot and not working
reliably at all and I noticed that not only was the
heatsink small and pathetic but it was also caked with
dust. What I need to know is did these chips have
heat issues? Is the heat a likely cause for the instability?

Well if you can clean the heatsink of dust, and the crashes reduce (it should lower temps a significant amount), you can assume heat is the culprit.

If it is exactely the same before and after cleaning the heatsink, you may have to blame another component.

Keep in mind that brand-name PCs like skimping on PSU's - could be that.

The celeron 1.3's were relatively cool CPUs. They are based on the Tualatin core which runs very cool and at low voltage. Most people are able to overclock them to 1729MHz with very little effort, which leads me to believe that massive dust accumulation is the source of your problem. NO cpu will run stably with dust caked on the HSF.

Back to the original post, the Celeron 1.3 would be a Tualatin core. Those didn't run that hot compared to some other chips on the market, but they DO need to be actively cooled. Replace the caked up OEM unit with a $10 aftermarket unit to take heat out of the equation. While you're at it, use some compressed air to blow dust out of the system, including the power supply. After all that, if still unstable try (after backing up data) running the restore CD.

Yes, the Celeron 1.3 would be a Tualatin core. It was a great CPU.
Nebor is thinking of different Celerons.

You will have to try something to reduce the heat to see if that is the problem.

Clean up the fan and maybe run it with the case open.

Yeah, that scorching ~30W of heat dissipated really needs a monster fan.

I ran one passive in a single-fan case with no stability issues. Probably just dust or software issues.

Seems that overheating was the issue because I have been running constant Prime95 and surfing the web with a new Volcano 2 installed and so far not a single crash.

I didn't realize it was a Compaq, that's a pity. I had a friend who had so many crazy things go wrong with his old Compaq. I was on the phone one time, it was taking his PC about 15 minutes to boot into Windows XP, and he starts yelling, "You know why they call it Compaq? Because they ComPACK it up your ass! This thing's a piece of sh!t! I swear, when they're doing compacting it, there's just a mouse hanging out of your butt."

EH, it's not so funny written out, but at the time with him raging and screaming, it was just about the funniest thing in the world.
