In one of our spare bedrooms, we want to install a ceiling fan. I have the mount setup and secure, but need some help with wiring. When I pulled the old light fixture (no ceiling fan) off the wall, I found the following wires:

Red
White
Black (not used)
Bare copper ground

Now on the ceiling fan, I have the following wires:

Green (ground)
White
Black
Black with white stripe

How do I wire this? The switch on the wall is a single switch, not dual. Do I wire it as follows:
Ceiling-----------------Fan
Bare Copper-----------Green
White------------------White
Red--------------------Black / Black and White striped (together)

Thanks in advance!

The ceiling fan is usually wired so that it can also have a light attachment. You did not mention if you had this. It is unusual that the red wire was previously used, but not the black. Was it a 3-way? What you have mentioned should work, if you don't have a light attachment, but I wouldn't tie the Black and the black/white together without knowing what they are for.

I would recommend that you replace the switch with a variable speed silent control so that you can vary the fan speed easily.

Most commonly ceiling fans will have 4 wires, or 3 wires plus a ground. Black, white, green, and an additional color (usually red, blue, or black/white striped). The black wire is the hot lead for the fan motor. The red/blue/striped wire is the hot lead for the optional light kit. The white wire is the neutral lead for both the fan motor and light kit. The green wire is ground for the entire assembly.
