CD's In a Microwave

I am sure that everyone has heard that if you put a cd in the microwave for a few seconds, there are flashes of light, and the cd get burnt to a crisp. i was wondering, why do the burn marks on the cd look the way they do?

My dad had some old flourescent lightbulbs leaning up against the side of his house next to the trash cans. Inside the house against that wall, he had an amplifier for his ham radio equipment. Whenever he talked, the bulbs would light up. It was wierd.

We use that method at work to destroy CDs. Some contain confidential data, so we don't want to just throw them away. About 3-4 seconds should do it. Plus, you always want to put a cup or two of water in the microwave as well - otherwise without a heating load the magnetron could be damaged.
