CDRW Stuck in PIO mode

my cdrw(cyberdrive) got stuck in PIO mode and I have searched the entire internet looking and trying out every possible method of putting it in DMA. I just build a new computer and the CDRW is taken from another computer(in the old computer, the cdrw worked perfectly in DMA). Lately, I noticed in my device manager, there's a big yellow question mark label other devices==>usb controller in my device manager. I think this is related to the reason why my cdrw is in PIO mode because when i uninstall the yellow question mark, my cdrw no longer visible in my computer.

Here's my spec: SHuttle AN35N Ultra, Athlon XP 2500+,256mb VS Corsair, 80Gb(WD) on Prim Master, CDRW on Secondary Master, Window XP,.

Anyone have this problem? Kinda annoying having ur cdrw in pio mode, takes forever to burn a cd.

Try this:

1) Update the driver for the USB controller and have it look to Windows Update for the new driver source. You have WinXP SP1a or SP2 already, right?

2) Use a flat 80-wire ribbon cable to the CD-RW drive

3) Uninstall the ATA/IDE controllers completely in Device Manager, then reboot. Windows will redetect them and now put them back on UDMA mode if they're in PIO. This routine sort of resets Windows' circuit breaker on the PIO thing.

Problem resolved. I updated the usb controller from the software that came with my motherboard and now my CDRW is in DMA mode 1. I never thought USB controller would be related to IDE controller.

Thanks mechBgon

The USB controller might be on the same IRQ as the hard drive controller, so this might have been the problem.
