traded for on the trading board here so no manual! not that i would read it anyways!

you need to run the test speed program for hdd,cd drive DAE extraction, etc in tools so that the software knows what defaults to use.

Just a guess, but I have also seen this happen because your source drive is not fast enough to feed the information for your burner to accomplish the burn at its default speed.

CDRW's are tagged at the speed they are made for, a 2X RW disc will only write at 2X

hmm,Gunbuster, while agreeing with you in principle, I see no mention of leftyman using a rewritable cd with his write speed problem.
my interpretation is that this is occuring with normal cdrs from his posting!

they are 8x cdr's. i tested it in the tools options like bacillus said and it will not support 8x, only 2x or 4x i have a generic( nec) 32x cd slaved to the cdrw. have a 800 tbird, 128 meg ram, maxtor 7200 13.6 gig hard drive, biostar motherboard and a tnt2 card, nothing o/ced. even though it tests succesfully at 4x it records at 2x. the properties panel shows both with dma.

are you trying to copy cd to cd as this will most likely lead to buffer under runs leading to coasters given that your cd drive is on the same channel as cdrw & the speed of your cd drive.
you'll probably have to make an image on the hdd before recording to use x8. .
is DMA enabled for the hdd?

I don't use it, but does anyone know if Acraptec is crippled to 2x until it's registered? Like Nero and CDRWin used to be?
