CDRW not recognized under xp sp2

Hi everybody!! I upgraded my computer from w 98 se to xp sp2 and now my cdrw doesn't work. It's a Liteon burnproof LTR12101b 12x10x32 drive. It used to work great under w98 se. But under xpsp2 it's not working and it's not showing up in the device manager as a cdrw. Just says "Lite-On LTR-1210b" nothing about it being a cdrw. I checked the Lite On web site and it's still listed but no indication of a driver update. Can you guys help me?? :)

I just checked my device manager on my work comp. I have a DVD/CD combo, and a CD-ROM. It only shows their name.

Does it not function?

I dont think it needs a special driver under xp. just put a blank in and see what happens, xp burns right out of the box.

Yes. Just put a blank in, a window should pop up asking what you want to burn. Or pick a file and sent it to the cdrw via the right click "send to" menu.

You can also use nero if you want.

Well I tried it and yes the dialog box came up and I clicked "burn to cd using windows media" then the windows media player pops up with my play list and the boxes on the left are checked. I click "start burn" it blinks then nothing happens. No drive activity in the cdrw. :(

Ive never actually used Windows Media Player to burn, so Im not sure how it works..

Try this. Pick a file, use the Send To menu option via right click. A balloon near the system tray should pop up saying you have files to burn, click it and an explorer window will pop up, on the left should be a "record (burn?) to CD" link, click it and see what happens.

I did what you said except I did it in windows media and right clicked each audio secection and it gave me the option to create a "burn list" so after doing all that I clicked "Burn" on windows media and it fist did some kind of "converted" indication and now the drive light on the cdrw is lit and it seems to be working!! :) I'll let it go and see what it sounds like (classical music)..I'll let you know..thanks for helping. Hope it sounds as good as it did with w 98 se.

Well it's playing back now and so far so good. Bolero is the first track and it sounds good.

Thanks CrispyFried..you were a big help. And give windows media a try for burning. Seems to work good. Although I'll have to practice with it to gain comfort. Ok..I'am a few min.into it and I hear occasional pops and clicks. What do you think that is?

Im not sure about the pops.. you can reinstall Nero and try that.

Ive heard that its better to burn audio cds at a lower speed than max but if it did ok at max under 98 it should under xp.

To lower the burn speed under media player goto Tools -> Options -> Devices, select the cdrw, then Properties -> Recording and select Medium (or 8x maybe) under the drop down box. Give it a shot and see what happens.

It clicks and pops with standalone CD players and the Lite On?

MY brother in law seemed to think that burning Audio and Movies at slower speed makes them better but I never do and all my seem to be fine.

I never do either, but many peeps swear by burning audio cds at lower speed. Cant hurt though.

I'm pretty sure that older versions of Nero have a problem with XP SP2. Did you check for an update for Nero?

I checked the source material I used in media player and it has pops and clicks so I can't blame the burner. I deleted it all and am going to try again..this time I'll shut down my virus checker and zone alarm to free up resorces and see what happens. There seems to be a lot of xpsp2 issues with Nero (google). Although the latest revision may be good..don't know.

Well I tried again and made a nice cd copy of Chopin classical piano music. As best as I can tell it's a mirror of the original. Sounds very good. And I used Windows Media to make the burn. Now that I know how to use it I'll continue to use Windows Media. Thanks for all the help everybody. You guys are great. I'am now going to burn a CD of cello music. Thanks again.
