ok i just got a new plextor 24x burner. this is my first experience with cd writers. so i follow the instructions. i set the burner to be hte master, and the CDrom to be the slave on the 2ndary channel. seems fine. load up, its detected all right. i installed eazy cd creater 5, and i downloaded clonecd and the plexiwriter software. When i first looked at 2ndary ide channel it was set to PIO only, so i made it to be DMA when avavaible.(im running win2k pro). I noticed when running the software like clone cd , eazy that it would freeze up and i would have to CAD and kill it. and if i go to device manager and click on the plextor and properties. then hit ok(not changing anything) the mouse hourglass comes up and it loads for like 5 secs, which i dont remember it doing before. and if i click on my computer it hangs a little like its taking to long to detect the drives to show up. A friend of mine told me he had similar problems to this, i dont know how close his actually were, but he said he took it to bestbuy and they had problems with it to. so they set the Burner as master on the 2ndary. and slaved the cdrom off the hard drive. i talked with someone else and they said that would slow the hard drive down some. The last piece of information i can think of is i had Daemon tools installed. which is virtual cd rom software. windows detected it as a phantom scsi cd rom or something. but i deleted that drive and uninstall all the daemon software i dont know what to believe.i actually started burning it was going at 4x when i tried putting it on select and 24x. i have been fooling around with this for hours and its becoming frustrating. I dont know if this is just a simple correction that im overlooking or what. Any help at all would greatly be appreciated. I'm sorry if this is somewhat hard to read or understand, i tried to include everything that happend. and if system specs would matter in any of this i have.

The configuration u have now (writer master & cdrom slave to the HDD) is definitely ok cuz it also gives u the posbility to burn on the fly which is your recorders specialty ;)Note that the writer should be reported by the bios as ATA33-is it? And don't worry about your disk's performance-first of all it's one of the best and then as Anandtech tested in a relative article, the drop in performance by this combo is generally not even noticeable in their tests.Remember to use an 80pin ATA cable for the HDD&cd rom channel

My (Aopen) manual specifically recommends to put the burner as slave on IDE2 and the CDrom as master on IDE2. The harddisk(s) should be on IDE1.

Works fine for me.
