CDRW & DVD Questions/Advice

I'm buying a new CDRW and DVD-ROM. I've been told that the Lite-On 40x is a great drive, and can be flashed to 48x. But, what's the difference between the two models: LTR40125S & LTR40125W? What do the S and W mean? Color? Is one Silver and the other White?

Also, what DVD should I get? I've been told by some that the Pioneer 16x slot-loaded is great, and by others that it's awful. Others told me to get a Toshiba. Is tray better than slot somehow? I dunno... what's good?

I won't be much help with the CDRW, I can help with the DVD though.

I've got a pioneer slot load drive, it's an excellent device. Some complain about the noise level, but I cant hear it over my CPU fan (it's a delta screamer so I can't hear much over it). DVD Rip speeds are somewhere around 2-6x. Seek time is top notch, much speedier then my old 48x CDrom drive.

I've not noticed my DVDs/CDs getting scratched by my slot load drive and I've had no trouble with labels coming off of CDRs. I would go tray-free if I could find a slot load CDRW drive.
