I have a LiteOn 24X10X40 CDRW drive that keeps ejecting any CD that I put in it. I have been trying to get the drive to work for about 3 hours to no avail. Maybe, someone can give me some ideas. Here is what it is doing:

I put a CD in the drive and the light on the front will blink about 8-10 times and then eject the CD. I have tried two different IDE cables, changed the jumper from master to cable select, put the drive in another system and it continues to do the same thing. I have an old Creative 32X CD drive that I plugged into the same system and it works just fine.

It shows the drive correctly in windows device manager and says the drive is working properly. I delected it from device manager and re-installed it. I tried a music cd instead of a data cd and it does the same thing. After all the years of building systems, I have never had something like this occur. The front light never goes solid like it is reading anything, so I would assume that by blinking it is trying to read but can't and just ejects the cd tray. I am totally puzzled.

Help - I don't have a clue other than the drive is just bad. :(

will the drive stay closed if there is nothing it it? If it does you might (slight possibilty)be able to hold the [shift] key when you load the CD, (holding that key will skip the autorun feature, which might be causing the problem)

this certainly wont fix the problem, but could help you diagnose it. let us know what happens.

(if the drive wont stay shut with no disc in it than you likely have something jammed in there)

The drive does stay closed with out a cd in the tray. The tray will open and close just fine without a cd in the tray. Eject button works for the tray to either open or close the tray and it stays open or closed without a cd to read. I will try the auto run off to see if that works. I don't think anything is stuck in there but will check that also.

Will check it and update findings. Thanks.

Tried the shift key to not use autorun and even turned of autorun setting. Same as before - blinking front light and then eject. This drive does not even rattle and the tray movement in and out is very smooth, also.

Any other ideas anyone?

I had a similar thing happen with my old Plextor 16x CD burner. It started happening to me after shipping my PC during a move, so I assumed that the laser was now out of whack (not properly calibrated), and it could no longer read any CD put into it. I ended up buying a new burner after 2 weeks of trying to diagnose/fix the problem. Hopefully this is not the prob with yours!

I flashed the firmware and it did stop just blinking and then ejecting the cd. It would still not read or recognize that a cd was in the tray when I checked using both explorer and my computer. It may very well be as you indicate that something was damaged in shipping with the internal read functions. :(

Looks like it is just non-repairable, at least by me. :(

Looks like you might be out of luck or dealing with a bad burner...

Is the driver recognized fine in "My Computer"

AT least the lite-ons are cheap..

You should be able to pick a new 52x up for at least 45 or so..

Or check the FS/FT, I bet you can get one for $25-30

And it will give you a little faster burn. :)
I actually picked this one up here on FS forums for excellent price. Bought it to put in a little rig that I am putting together for a University of Texas student that works for me. She needs a new pc for school and games but of course has no money. ;)

Already picked up another here on AT to use. I also want to say that I don't fault the seller. I believe that it was just mis-handled by USPS in transit, since the seller that I purchased the burner from is highly respected.
