cdrw drive brands

how much does this really matter? i was going to buy the lite-on 40x cdrw from dell for $89, but then the pacific digital deal came up, and that's like $30... now people are saying that the pacific digital might be a rebagged lite-on... might being the operative word.. people are also getting other brands.. anyway.. point is, does it really matter? why does it matter?? thanks in advance for your help

i don't think it really matters to some extent. i had an acer back in the 4x days and it was the worst thing i've ever had. then i got an HP cuz i heard those were good. and it served me well until copy-protection became and issue. but it's still going strong for my parents. now i have a plextor 24x cuz i got tired of all this brand name stuff and just went for the "best of the best" as some people call it. if i were you i'd just get the liteon at dell. $100 is nothing for a liteon which everyone seems to say are amazing. my friend has the 24x liteon and he said it's great. and one of my other friends is going to get the dell deal on the liteon on too i believe.

My brother bought a Pacific Dig for his kids
PC and it was for sure a Lite-On. But seriously,
I bought a Plextor 40X burner for $149 and it is
by far the best burner on the market barring none.

The only thing wrong with getting a rebadged drive (Cendyne, Pacific Digital, etc) is that you never know what drive you will get. Some will turn out to be a Lite-On, others a Mitsumi, Acer, or one of the other manufacturers. If you're concsious about quality, you should stick with a popular brand like Plextor or Yamaha. Both companies make quality drives, and you can't go wrong with either of them.

I think it's best to just spend the money on a great plextor drive and be done with it...I spend a lot of time with off-brand cdrw's, and I spend a lot of wasted hours until I went out and bought the new Plextor 40x12x40. Spending the extra money seems better then spending the extra time to me.
