CDRW and Audio Hardware problems with Win 2k Professional

I have an HP 8555C with an HP 8000+ series CDwriter Plus, and a Multimedia Audio Controller, PCI Input Device, and PCI Simple Communications controller. None of these work. I've tried searching for new drivers to no avail. Another problem I'm having is that Adaptec Software 3.5 loaded on here won't find the rom either, and when trying to update the Adaptec software to 4.0 (downloaded from their site), it says no valid copy found. I'm having problems on other machines as well with the COM ports. This 8555C HP loads Com1 and Com2, but Com2 has a problem (driver I believe can't check resopurces if device not functioning in w2k). The other two machines load only Com1, and when you try to add another port, it can't find drivers. Why is it that Com1 drivers won't work on other Com ports? These may be dumb questions, but I need my CDRW. Help if you can?

I can only talk about the Adaptec now Roxio, a company they spun off) and their CDR software. I can tell you the only Roxio software that will work with W2K reliably(?) is ver. 5 with all the various patches. If you buy it at retail and don't find a sticker on it warning you against installing TakeTwo (part of the package) watch out. Always do a custom installation and don't install TakeTwo it will blue screen W2K almost certainly.

My only comment is I used to be a Adaptec fan but now their software including version 5, is so buggy (in my opinion) I have given up on it and use HotBurn Pro. I burn thousands of CD's yearly with HotBurn to distribute to customers and no problems, no coasters, no BSDs. Until Roxio fixes the problems watch out. Go to any CDR news group such as comp.publish.cdrom.software (use your newsreader) and find many more interesting things.

What really worries me is that Microsoft has included some Roxio software in XP which from testing by some friends of mine (I haven't installed XP) still has some of the ver. 5 bugs, some major some annoyances.

Thanks for the advice, but it seems windows doesn't even find the CDRW, and I've tried manually installing it several times, using drivers from the restore disk (which obviously won't work). I'm hoping someone out here knows of some kind of solution to get this to work. Forgot to mention in the OP that it's Win 2k Pro.

The problem your having is most likely because of installing the version of EZCD you did. Disappearing CDR/Ws are one of the common problems with Roxio software. You might also try removing the aspi32.dll driver you may have installed (just rename it for a test so you can name it back if needed). It can also cause this problem sometimes.
