Hey

was just wondering, if there were any CDRs available that were silver on the bottom, like the ones that are when you purchase games, software, etc.

Or are all cdr dyes blue, green, yellow, etc and not even close to silver? Thanks.

One more question, what are the most reputed and solid/reliable 80MB CDR brands (opinion).

Thx

Cheers
PB

I've seen some silver bottom cds out there, but I just don't remember where. I've used Sonys, Imations, and TDKs all without any problems.

Does anyone know if there's any name brands that come with silver bottoms? So I can just buy a bunch of them without having to buy samples first to inspect the dye? Thanks.

Not to change the subjectut I just bought CDR's that were all BLACK, the bottom was jet black. They are 80min Memorex 16X Write. So far, they have proven to be very good CDR's, I would definately buy them again. Is it live, ,or is it Memorex?

the black CD-R (memorex) aren't the same as Playstation games...

I think I've used Kodaks that were silver. Right now I'm using 700MB 16X Verbatim Azo Blue which are great for the price. Fuji, Imation also make good stuff...

2 main brands that sell the silver dye are Mitsui and Kodak. I don't know of any more, other than the 'generic' stuff.

This thread reminded me of a site I haven't visited in a long time and almost forgot about.

CD Media World is the Mecca of all your burning questions! (pun intended) :)

This gigantic table lists every CD-R brand and model manufactured and gives detailed information on the color top (silver, gold) and color dye (green, blue), etc. The color top is what you see when you look at the bottom of the CD-R. The color dye refers to the chemical used:

cyanine=cheapo (but EXTREMELY popular)
pthalocyanine=elite

Of course, it's been a while since I learned all this, so definitely bookmark that site, because it's a handy reference. Nice hardware reviews on burners and software reviews.

Hmm, I think I'll get my nocturnal butt in bed now.

Hope this helps.

Most of the "sliver" media I've seen has a greenish tint. I was looking for some a while back to try and get some music CD's that'd play in my Toshiba DVD player.

Some of the CDRW's are remarkibly silver on the bottom...

Mr Bond,

Use the "Memorex CD-RW Platinums" for Toshiba DVD Drives.

After much trial and error, I found these work better than any others I have tried. I have burned music and Video (vcds) that works on my DVD player (~ 90% success). The interesting thing is my DVD model "2200" doesnt support cd-r/rw media, officially. :)

<< They've had black cd's in playstations for a long time. >>

These are different.

I saw some of those "Playstation" CD-R blanks at a show recently, they
are black on top but still silver (blue, green, yellow) on the recording surface.

The ones Beeker35 are referring to use a new additive to the plastic that
absorbs visible light, but still reflects the light used by a CD-ROM laser.
This additive is supposed to make the disks more scratch-proof and offer
more UV protection than standard CD blanks.

----

Most (if not all) of the "Silver" CD blanks are really just reformulations of the
blue, green, or yellow dyes in a way that provides a more neutral visual surface
to our eyes (so it looks more silvery reflective).

I have seen some silver bottom CDR's, but they a lot different then the ones you buy games/software on.... The "silver material" is stamped and them adhreed to the platics, which can never be changed... Which is different from the CDR's which has a layer of silver-gold-green-blue which is burned by the laser in your drive..

IMO, the king of CDR goes to TDK. Their certified Plus CDRs are simply amazing. They even stated "all-speed recordable". The runner-up goes to Imation, I think. I heard many people are satisfied using them.

Helznicht,

Thanks! I'll try those. I've had hit/miss luck with CDRW's, glad to know there's a stable brand out there

This is a site that I've been to, also see them at the computer show alot. Not sure if they have what you're looking for

Anyone ever use the different color ones like purple/red/bule/green bottom?

Jsut wondering how these worked or if they were reliable at all.
