i've been noticing that when i burn music cds at 12x they sometimes skip (even right after I burn them).. if i burn them at slow speeds like 1 or 2x then they seem to play better in my car. I have heard that there is no difference but I was wondering what you guys have to say. does burning at slower speeds increase the quality of the burn?

Many have said that it does. In fact, higher speed burns tend to reduce longevity and compatibility of the CD-Rs, as well as maybe even sound quality.

I would have to agree with the statement above. However, check your media and make sure it's good media too.

I burn my Audio CDs at 16x with my Yamaha CDRW drive using Fuji CDR Discs without any problems, i have a 44x burner but the media I use limits the write speed to 16x. On my friends computer that I built I put in a Sony 24x CDRW drive and whenever he burns music it skips, he usually uses Imation or some generic brand CDRs.

Like DrZone and HiTech said, use high quality CDR.

I always use Fuji's discs and havent had any problem with skips yet (i usually burn at either 16x or 20x)

look for CDRs that are made Japan, they are better built. Taiwanese CDRs r usually craps.
