CDrom tray won't stay open

I have a cdrom that has recently started acting up a bit. When I open the drive tray, it comes open and then closes immediately. There isn't enough time to put the disc into the tray before it closes again. Any thoughts as to why this is happening? The drive is about 4 years old. It will stay open though when a disc is already in it and I open it to remove the disc. Odd. Thanks.

Have you recently upgraded your os or any software? You could try going to the manufacturer's website and downloading the firmware drivers for the cdrom and seeing if that helped. It might be dirty as RPB suggested, in which case it's on it's way to being dead, you might want to consider getting a new one.

I have an older one that does the same thing.. I call it my snapping turtle.. 🙂 You have to be quick to drop in a CD..well I just retired it as it is also slow as a turtle too. 🙂

I agree with Rusty. I would try to upgrade to the newest firmware version and try it for a while. If it continues, then I would junk it for a new one. I had one that did the same thing a while back, and I finally got sick of it, and bought a new one🙂

Thanks for the suggestions....
I decided to trash it and put a burner in its place. Great suggestions though, next time I'll have a better feel for trouble shooting it.
