cdrom not working in linux?

I've just installed the latest SuSE linux on my computer and it initially reads my installation CD, but once installed no CD registers. The cdrom is compatible as I've used it on other flavors (and it'll install). I'm having the same problems with my floppy even though both sre in the fstab file.
What could I be doing wrong and how can I remedy this?
I appreciate all help.
