Cdrom missing at boot?

I was going to reinstall windows xp on a machine but for some reason the cdrom will not show up when the computer boots. So I can not boot to the cdrom with Winxp on it. I tried another cdrom. I tried a different cable. I even tried a different ide channel. All the jumpers are correct. It shows up in the bios but not at boot. This computer belongs to a friend and it did have a trojan virus on it. Could it have messed something up? Thanks!!!

are you saying you don't see it when you POST or that it simply won't boot off the cd?

does the hard-drive go on to boot the bad install of windows?

stupid question: is it plugged in and getting enough power, I?ve had CD drives stopped functioning properly because i had to many fans, this was a CD-burner not burning, but still worth looking into.

It shows up in the bios but not at the boot screen. All the cables are plugged in correctly and the jumpers have been double checked.
