CDROM IDE setup problem

background story: I had 2 cdrom devices on ide2 cable..1 HDD on ide1 cable... no problems (cept for some install issues under win2kpro sp4)

I added a second HDD onto the IDE1 cable.

All was well.

Sometime after (maybe a couple of weeks --so this may be unrelated to new HDD) i started noticing 1 cd-rom failing to read disks, followed by the other one also failing to read disks...eventually, neither drive could read any disk at all.

So i remove both drives and BUY a new LG dual layer DVD re writer (make it primary on ide2). (Yes, i triple checked cable placement and primary/slave settings)

I boot up and get the immediate bios warning: Invalid slave device (incompatible ATAPi) press f1 to resume (not exact message but close enough that i can remember)

SO.. i hook up one of my other cdroms (that i had decided was dead) to ide2 (slave).
and the computer boots normally...the old drive still can't read a disk. but my new one can..no problem. I disable my old crdom in hardware profile. And that's how i have it(ide setup) now.

The problem is my new drive has failed on every installation i have tried now.. eventually it will say can't read disk...or wrong volume. ..right in the middle of copying. So i am left with partial installs.

sooo... two questions.

1)Why do i get the bios error invalid/incompatible slave device if i just have one cd-rom hooked up to the ide2 cable? (DMI not recognized i took away 1 drive perhaps?)

2) Why the hay is my new drive failing to install anything!?

(as part of a solution i did try updating windows install shield to version 3)

----

actually one more related question...

3) My old LG cd-rewriter makes a noise when i tilt the drive up and down with my hand...as if something is loose inside. Is that normal?

TIA 🙂

you will laugh but i finally solved the problem.

duh! it turns out i forgot to detect the new HDD i installed in the bios first.
I set it up in windows completly forgetting bios would not auto detect it..until i told it to.

Now all my drives are working as they should again.

A good lesson to be learned though 🙂)
