CDROM help needed ASAP!!

i just put a system together, celeron 366, with 36x CDROM...booted up, installed cdrom drivers, went into setup to install win98...it was searching for installed components and just hung at 100%, so i rebooted, tryed to run setup again, but i hit dir or cd win98 in the cdrom drive it says something like CDR101: NOT READY READING DRIVE D... i made sure all teh cables are in there fine, the power of the cdrom works..but it says that!! how come?

btw: cdrom is hooked up to the harddrive so its primary slave..

got mscdex file installed?
is there any travel protection still in the cd rom? could be a plastic screw or plate somewhere.
checked autoexec.bat and config.sys?

yes mscdex is there..cdrom drivers are installed properly..i tried the ones that came with it and the OAK ones on the win98 boot disk..
what baffles me is that the cdrom worked, i rebooted, then it stopped working

btw: its a Lite-On cdrom, and was refurbished..from Compgeeks
i dont wanna have to RMA it cuz i gotta pay shipping!! and it'll take weeks...took 12 days to get this

Only thing I can come up with is to check the IDE and irq setup.
And trying it on another ide channel

If you have other drives in the PC, remove them and try a hard drive and CD-ROM only config. You can add other drives latter.

100% and hangs! bumer man!

i put the cdrom as the only drive in there..primary master..
still get that same error...looks like i got a dead cdrom
