CDrom got stupid

A friend's CDrom, that has worked OK for 2 years, now plays audio CD's but won't read, or even acknowledge the existence of, digital CD's.

It's a Creative 52X IDE, with Win98OE (Original Edition) on a AMD300 with TX chipset.

Any suggestions? TIA

Are those pressed data CD's or CD-R's? Just wondering since data on cheap CD-R's sometimes gets corrupted over time.

If not, I think it might be time for a new drive..

I once had a drive that read regular CD's but not burned ones, but it seems that you have a different problem... Unless someone in these forums have other advice, I would say the drive's finished and it's time to get a new one.

Tried to clean it? My CDROM is about to had it as well.. in certain situation it can not read audio/data CDs correctly. There's one situation that my Toshiba CDROM is playing audio, but the vocal part is missing (only the background music).. I think the laser head probably needs to be realigned and/or need power calibration, but I don't have the technicle knowledge to do that. All I can do is try to clean it(not working).
