CDROM Driver Doesn't Work!

We have an old panasonic cdrom drive at school, and it doesn't work. We have used numerious "generic" and "universal" drivers, as well as pansonic's drivers for that particular cdrom drive, yet nothing works. We're trying to set this up in MSDOS 6.21. If anyone has had any experience with CDROM drivers in MSDOS please respond to this message.

Have you tried using the generic set off the Windows boot disk, I am sure that you can use these

I have never seen a CD rom that does not need a driver. Or a operating system that would see one without a driver being present in the OS. A windows driver will not work with the CD rom you will have to find a DOS DRIVER somewhere, any older driver such as those that came with a 2 or 4X were mostly DOS drivers. If you cannot find one PM me and I will E-Mail you one that may work.

If it is a paralell drive check the port is on Bi-Directional mode, If it is IDE read all the readme files that came with the drivers..

PleaseGive more information otherwise I can't help.

The drive IS connected to properly to the computer... we have tried the drive on two different machines to and the same problem occurs on both machines (both are running MSDOS 6.21, by the way). It will say that the drivers have been loaded and if you type in d: it'll go to drive d, but if you type in 'dir' you get an error message saying something about CR101 (or something similar) and they the normal option of either Abort, Retry, and Fail. Any ideas?

TextHello I'm having the same problem with a PC of mine although I found the driver that I need I just don't know how to get it to work ..
I need to know how to make a bootable floppy with the CD ROM driver on it so it will install.

New Problem...

The CD drive still doesn't work, but the people at school decided the best way to fix the problem was to format the hard drive, install dos and try again 😛 This really isn't a very big deal since there was nothing really valuable on the computer to begin with, but now when I try to install the drivers i get a whole new set of error messages...

The driver-install ask if the cd-rom drive is on a SB16, SBPro, or you can enter an address. The drive is connected to the computer through an old SB16 so I click the option to install for that. The computer then waits for about two-three minuts while the message "Scanning Panasonic CDROM Drive..." is on the screen. Then it gives some error message and install aborts...

Your CD Rom is connected to a sound blaster 16 card? How old is this computer?
If you are using Dos 6.22, chances are that you won't use the sound card at all. IDE port on the sound card is a headache to configure (most of them have different ports and jumper settings on them depending on the brand of the CD ROMs)
If you have a computer that has 2 IDE ports then connect the CD Rom to one of them (either as slave on Primary IDE or master on Secondary IDE). MAKE SURE THAT YOU SET UP THE BIOS TO HAVE THE IDE PORTS ENABLED OR SET TO AUTODETECT SO YOU CDROM CAN BE DETECTED PROPERLY!
If you have the original installation disk for the CD Rom driver you should use it. (It may ask for a Microsof's file called something like mscdex.exe you should find it in the Dos 6.22 install diskette or copy it from Win 95/98 operating system.)When this driver is installed correctly, it should have copied some driver files to the c: drive and modified the config.sys and autoexec.bat files so the drivers can be loaded upon startup.
Hope this info helps.
