I have Win98 and today my cdrom drive stopped functioning. Whenever I insert a CD, it neither autorun nor displays anything. When I click on my empty looking CDROM drive icon in "My Computer", all it says is that "E: is inaccessible, the drive is not ready" even though I inserted a CD in it!

What can be wrong with it? It worked perfectly before.

Theres always the good ol reliable take it out and put it back in trick. Unplug the cd rom from the ide chain, start the pc, shut it down, plug it in, and start it up again. It sounds really stupid but sometimes it works, at least it has for me.

Works now, thanks all. It's odd when I turn it off for two days and start it again, it reads cds again. Damn computer technology these days.

Is it a cheapo no-name brand? My old CDROM drive was a POS because it often had problems reading certain CDs.
