CDROM drive not detecting CDROMs

My CDROM drive sometimes doesn't detect CDROMs, but restarting the computer fixes it. Its not because of scratched CDs or a dirty laser lens because the CDROM drive icon disappears from ''my computer''
What would cause this?

try deleting the secondary ide ( if thats the controller its connected to) from the device manager. Also try deleting the cdrom out of device manager. Reboot, if the problem persists, re-install windows. Sounds like a corrupt driver or the like, but could be something else.

Good luck as I had this same problem with my KK266 MB and never found a fix. I would reboot and the drive would read 1 CD then the same thing. I removed the device in Device manager changed the ide cables changed from master to slave and nothing worked. The only thing it could be is the drive is going bad but I cannot say but I did replace the drive as it ached up a bit in my new system as it would have a bit of trouble installing from the drive for some reason.
