cdr speeds

this may be a stupid question ... but if i try to use a 4x cdr disk in a 12x cdr drive, would i record at 4x or will the drive try to do it at 12x and fail miserably? i presume the other way works rt? ie. 12x disk in a 4x drive. thanks!

The speed on a CDR is the speed that it is rated at for burning. If a disc is listed as 4x, you can try to burn it at 12x, but it might not work. In my experience, the drive will try to burn a disc at the highest possible speed for the drive, unless you set the speed manually. The rating on the disc only shows what speed(s) it is guaranteed to burn at. I've heard of people burning 2x rated CDs at 8x, so I don't see why giving a 4x CD a shot at 12x would be a problem.

If you have a 12x, it probably has burn-proof, if it does any speed might work on it. I have a 6x creative labs and when I use this cheapo 4x cdr, it crashes but with my 12x burnproof, it burns great on the 4x cdr.
