cdr - reflactive coating

Not really. They are so cheap it's not worth it. Toss it and try another one. Like we're talking an average of about 40 cents a pop these days for 16X 80 minute blanks.

(The recording surface is a varnish, and can't be polished like a commercial scratched CD.)

I had the same problem.

Basically, all you can do is read off whatever files are not in the damaged section. If the ones you need wont copy off, then you are pretty much done.

What is damaged is actually not a reflective coating, it's the actual surface that is recorded on. So if it's ruined, then so is your data.

Get what you can off the disc as soon as you can.

if you have data lost due to damaged media (the actual reflective layer - not the clear plastic), your SOL. sorry!
