Prices for CD-R discs to rise
Friday, 3 October 2003

Three major optical storage disc makers in Taiwan ? Ritek, CMC Magnetics (CMC) and Prodisc Technology ? have all raised their CD-R disc prices starting in October, according to the companies.
While CMC and Prodisc said they have raised their CD-R prices by 5% to about US$0.23, CMC also confirmed higher CD-R quotes of between US$0.22 and US$0.23.

In the second quarter, all the companies raised their CD-R disc prices by about 10% from the first quarter. The continuous price hike has been a result of strong demand and suspension of capacity expansion, and the makers have enjoyed high utilization rates, according to the companies.

Looks like FAR cdrs might become a thing of the past.

The most I have ever had at one time is about 1000. I have had three burners die on me from burning so many cds. The lasers just lose intensity after a while. I guess I can't complain because the drives and the cds were usually FAR or close to it. :)

I remember seeing a story about CD-Rs going up 100% in cost a few years back, maybe one or two. Everyone was panicking and it never happened. I'm starting to think the companies do this to clear out their inventory. Can't wait until DVD-R's become this cheap.

This news would really frighten me if it didn't crop up every other month. For the last 3 years we keep hearing doom and gloom stories about rising CDR costs because of typhoons in Taiwan, RIAA pressures or a severe plastic shortage. This has quickly devolved into a case of the boy who cried wolf. I'm paying the same now for quality TY discs that I payed for junk 3 years ago.

5% is a PENNY A FREAKING DISC!! If the sky falls and prices do really rise 5% somehow I think we'll all manage to survive without taking out a 2nd mortgage to buy CDs.
