CDR Media buyer's guide

Ok folks, I just bought myself a PlexWriter 16, and am itching to start burning copies of everything, backing up all of my data that is critical to the continuing tranquility of the Western world, like that.

Now, I see all kinds of CDR media listed in hot deals, and recently walked into an OfficeMax and just stared at an entire WALL of them. I don't mind paying a slight premium (in relative terms, I don't require free after rebate or a nickel each) for discs that will last me the longest period.

Could someone either list for me or direct me to a list that ranks the various manufacturers of burnable media in terms of quality, capacity, speed rating etc? I know many brands are rebadged as well, and would rather stay away from having to buy a spindle and test it.

Anyone?

The difference in life for discs is usually 10 years compared to 15 years. Think, will you really be using CDRoms, much less the data that you're backing up TODAY, in 10 years?

according to CHIP magazine here the top 10 CD-R Media.
1. Philips 12x CDR-74 Profesional
2. Traxdata 12x Gold
3. Maxell 12x CDR XK Pro
4. Kodak CDR Ultima
5. Philips 8x CDR-74 Profesional
6. Parrot CDR 74
7. Seiko Precission CDR
8. Samsung CD-R 74S
9. Fuji Film CD-R 700 Mb
10. Philips CDR-80

as u can see Philips CD-R taken the lead at number 1,5, and 10.
I suggest u go for Philips CD-R.

For some odd reason my plextor won't finish burning on compusa 16x 80 minute cd's (stops at about 80%). Also it looks like compusa brand cd's are rebagged memorex cd's.

Not sure about an all inclusive good/bad list but a good source for info on media also is CD Media World. I can also tell you from personal experience (i burn a fu*k load of cd's) that the following are the brands that have worked well for me: TDK, Kodak, Mitsumi, TY, HP, Yamaha and Imation are OK. I especially like the TDK's b/c they are PHYISCALLY much more durable than any others I have used. I like that b/c most of what I burn is audio, which ends up rolling around on the floor of my car. And the TDK's take a hell of a lot of abuse. Brands that totally suck (IMHO at least) are memorex and maxell.
